Ring Ring

Now that this is officially going to become a group blog - we should set up some type of format. How do we want to approach this? Should it just be randomness? The reason I wanted to have a blog is to spur conversation with a wide variety of people, friends in places I don't see too much, and, of course, to liven up a boring day at work.

I suggest one rule - keep it short. If I have to scroll down in the window to keep on reading then it is too long.

So, in an effort to start conversation, I'm going to throw out a topic. Thoughts and stories, etc, in the comments section to follow:

Topic #1: CELL-PHONES.

We've had these things forawhile now. How do you like them? How have they changed your life, for the better, the worse? Lost one down a drain, have one stolen, found someone elses?

Oh yes, cell phones. I have had so many that have been highest to lowest end. I even went to the extent of getting a picture phone which sadly drowned during a lovely evening at Le Tub.

The thing about cell phones that I do not like is when you see people out to dinner and one person is on their phone and it looks as if the entire dinner stops for them. Hello - you have a real human sitting next to you - talk to them!

An interesting next phase of cell phones is when you no longer have to carry car keys, credit cards or other things - just take out your cell and it can magically open doors or deduct money from your bank account. Now that is convenience. It's like walking around with a remote control to the world.

i must be the only one in the world who is uncomfortable talking on their cellphone in public! Why? First of all, I never answer my phone if anyone else is around. Not at dinner, not in the supermarket, not in a elevator. It's rude! (IMHO)

There's a compelete aversion on my part to anybody overhearing my conversation. (Why is that, I ask again? Someone quick, pyscho-analyze me!) I'm not a loud person, if I were to talk on my cell in a supermarket, say, you probably couldn't hear me. And yet, I can't.

Quick story: When I first got a cell (late in the CP revolution), I recall walking around New York City and describing things that were going on around me. "Passing 85th St, now. There's a strange substance on the floor. Should I investigate?" I felt a character on Star Trek. It was great.

For a few weeks my girlfriend had a cellphone (which wasn't of much use, because she kept lending it to other people), up to the day where she accidentally dropped it out of her coat pocket, straight into the toilet as it was flushing.

Obviously, the first thing we did (once done laughing) was to call it up every few minutes, to try to pinpoint its location in the pipes: and it ran for about two hours before dying.

It would have been really awesome if a sewer-man answered.

I can't believe it still rang! When I dropped mine into the intercoastal water it lasted about a minute and then the lights stopped flashing...that was the last sign of life.

yeah i'm surprised it still rang. i've never dropped mine in water, but people i know who have done that have lamented at how instantly their phone stops working when it comes into contact with water.

speaking of cell phones, what is UP with people talking on speaker phone in public? put that damn thing to your ear like a normal person! don't get me started on walkie talkie nextel phones and that ANNOYING beep it makes.
