The $100 Laptop

I want to teach the world to surf, says the man who invented the $100 laptop

A man at MIT has invited a laptop that is going to "bridge the world's gaping digital divide"

The computer is going to be made of a rubber shell, have a crank of some sort to get power when there is no plug around, and the power cord will double as a shoulder strap so kids can carry it to school. (turning the crank for 1 minute gives 10 minutes of power on the early versions of this machine)

The prototype is to be completed in November, and he expects that in the first year to make about 15 million and send them "first to children in Brazil, Egypt, Thailand and South Africa."

"The Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, has also committed to buying half a million of the machines for distribution to lower-income school students in the state"

I think this is an amazing concept and that it could change the way children go to school. It is my belief that in years from now kids might not learn how to hand write, and instead they will learn everything by typing. It could change the way society works - but of course the machine that can withstand a child beating it up has to be built first. I can barely get my laptop to work for more than 1 year without breaking something on it.
