Big Love Wiki of the Day
Last night on HBO a new show called Big Love premiered. It is about a family in Utah who are living a Nuvo-Mormon-Polygamous lifestyle. (Big Love on Wiki)
In this first episode we are introduced to a family with one husband and three wives. They have three separate homes all next door to each other with adjoining backyards. They try to appear to the outside world as a traditional family however we learn that their lives are very different than anything most Americans know.
So what is "nuvo" about it? We get a glimpse into the world that these people grew up in when the husband and two of the wives go visit the home of the husband's parents - where the polygamy lifestyle isn't hidden and the family all lives together in one house and the wives all refer to each other as "sister-wives." It looked like we jumped 100 years back in time, with people working the field and living in country homes.
The family that the show is surrounded by could be any person you see on the street - the daughter works in a fast food restaurant, the son plays sports for the school, the father is a business man, one of the mothers is a teacher - and they try really hard to convince you that they are "normal." But when you see where they originally came from you know it is a completely different world.
It should be known that in the late 1800's polygamy was outlawed by the Mormons - and to this day many Mormons do not consider people who practice polygamy Mormons.
Although I was confused and a little weirded out by what was going on in Big Love last night I think I will keep on watching because I can see some interesting things building up. With so many wives and children you can only expect competition and jealousy all over the place.
