Beck Wants Your Help

Beck has asked his fans to help create the cover for his new album "The Information"

The set, due October 3 via Interscope, will feature blank packaging and one of four sets of sticker sheets designed by artists from the United States and Europe, allowing consumers to customize the cover however they wish.

Although details have yet to be announced, a contest is in the works to select the best album cover creation, with final approval coming from Beck himself. Plans also call for displaying the sticker designs at select art galleries.

I'm worried about Beck. I'm a huge fan of his music, especially his records Mutations, Midnite Vultures, and Sea Change. His wild eclectic side is a major part of his charm. But. A blank cover? Despite the whole "fan-made" thingee, it feels a little lazy. Which, coincidentally, was my reaction to his previous record, Guero, which only came out in March 2005.

Why the quick follow-up? Was reactions to Guero that bad? That record was hailed as a "return to form" - meanwhile Sea Change was fucking brilliant even if it was depressing as all hell - so, what's this one? A second try?

Regardless, I'm happy he's returning to work with Nigel Godrich and will be very interested in what they come up with. I am hopeful that I will be amazed, as always.
