novel suggestions (pun intended)

i went to nj, ny and philly this weekend for weddings, babies and baby showers. on the bus ride up, i read some total throwaway novel that i can't even remember now. on the way back, however, i finally had the opportunity to read the kiterunner. it is one of my all time favorite novels now, along with anna karenina, the unbearable lightness of being and a fine balance. i highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read anything riveting in awhile.

now i'm hungry for more moving novels. any suggestions? what was the most memorable (best or worst) thing you've read lately?

This is so depressing, I really haven't read anything riveting lately and am not sure when I'll get a chance to read again. =-[

don't despair!! there are SO many great novels out there just waiting for you to love them.

I would recommend anything by David Mitchell. His new book, Cloud Atlas, is interesting and strange. His previous novel, Number9Dream, is addicting in its awesomness.

Another one of my favorite writers is A.L. Kennedy. I've been trying to get Shawn to read her novel So I Am Glad for, oh, about a year now. Her very short novel, Original Bliss, is also amazing and will probably appeal more to women.

Also (this one is dedicated to Tim) if you like really long, ambling, dream-like, novels that totally suck you into their world and don't let go, read Haruki Murkami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

I've got many more if anyone's interesting.

oooh julie i just got a bunch of books. they all looked interesting. so far i've read one, but i'll keep you updated on the rest, (that is if you haven't read all of them already).

Darjeeling by Bharti Kirchner
Ladies Coupe by Anita Nair
Serving Crazy with Curry by Amulya Malladi
A Breath of Fresh Air (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Amulya Malladi
The Sari Shop by Rupa Bajwa....
The Village Bride of Beverly Hills by Kavita Daswani
First Darling of the Morning: Selected Memories of an Indian Childhood by Thrity Umrigar

So far all I read was Serving Crazy with Curry, which was good, although not as good as The Mango Season, but a very fast easy read. Daswani you probably already read, I know we had talked about how her books are guilty pleasure reads:)

hey scorps, i've read the sari shop and the village bride of bevery hills. the sari shop started off promising but i felt like it dwindled off at the end and then came to an abrupt stop without any resolution. the village bride was entertaining at the time, but i didn't feel "inspired" to write as i do after the kite runner.

elad: thanks for the suggestions! i'll look into those novels.
