Heroes - Season 1, Episode 14 - Distractions

Ok, who else wants this damn explosion to happen already? I mean really we all know the inevitable here - let's just see it play out! We are getting tiny bits of information each episode and I am sure it will pay off in the end - but seriously I am getting a little impatient.

Peter is working with Claude to learn how to control his powers. He believes that he doesn't need another person around with the powers in order to use the power at that moment. Clause puts him through a series of challenges (such as stealing a woman's purse) which he fails at over and over again. Clause thinks Peter needs to clear himself of distractions and attachments to his family in order to control his own life and his powers. Peter finally realizes that he needs to just remember the Hero and their powers in order to use the power without them there.

During Claude's attempt to teach Peter how sucky people are, he brings Peter to Simone (who Peter thinks is pure and wonderful) to show him that she is all nicey nicey with Isaac. Peter gets all pissed and that's when he gets pushed off the building and almost dies and learns how to use his powers.

Meanwhile, Isaac is trying really hard to figure out where Peter is. Simone is all dependent on Isaac and wants his help to find Peter. Isaac keeps painting pictures with no people in it and finally realizes Peter is invisible. He calls Mr. Bennett and tells him that he knows whats up with Peter and that someone they thought was dead (Mr. Invisible- Claude) is still alive. This interests Mr. Bennett very much. Since when is Isaac in good with Mr. Bennett?

Nikki/Jessica totally flipped out on the psychologist and tazers her (not sure if she died). The psychologist was all like "those handcuffs could hold an elephant" and then when Jessica was set free you know it wasn't going to end nicely.

Nikki/Jessica is brought back to her padded cell just to be told she is being set free because the State dropped all charges against her! Linderman! (I just said that in the Newman - said by Seinfeld - voice). What is up with that guy? Nikki/Jessica insist that she needs the help and the guards say they have no other choice but to let her free.

Back at home Jessica is in charge again and Nikki is trapped in the mirror somehow. I think Nikki/Jessica need to work with Claude or Peter to learn how to control her powers.

Sylar breaks out of his cell and traps Mr. Bennett (who still does not have a first name) in the cell. He heads over to the Bennett house to find Claire and instead sees Mrs. Bennett. Suddenly he is all good Southern boy just trying to save a dog so he can get in good with the Mrs. She totally falls for it and then he suddenly gets all creepy obsessive about Claire and makes Mrs. Bennett think twice about having him in her house. When he senses her hesitation he starts getting all crazy and moving stuff (and her) around the room to scare her into place.

Mr. Bennett shows up with the Haitain just at the right time to save Mrs. Bennett from Sylar's rath. The Haitain clears her memory and we are told this has had to happen many times before.

Meanwhile Claire is out meeting with her real mom. They don't have much time because Claire lied to her mom and told her they were skipping school to see Manatees (which the mom agreed to). During the visit Claire finds out that her mom has traveled a lot, especially to Mexico. Claire finally comes out and slices her arm to show her mom the powers she has. Claire finds out her mom has a power of her own - to create fire.

Claire must leave and asks her mom about her dad. Her mom said it is complicated and will work on that for their next visit. Then Claire's mom calls the dad and guess who daddy is - Nathan Petrelli! SHOCKING!

When Claire gets back home her mom doesn't know why Claire was gone all day (because her memory was erased) and gets all pissed at Claire. Momma just don't understand!

Hiro is dealing with a wanna-be mobster dad who insists that Hiro come back home and be an executive vice president of his company (whatever company that is). Hiro's sister tells Hiro he is putting the family to shame and the investors think that if Hiro's dad can control his son how can he control the business? Hiro knows his destiny is to find the sword and be a HERO!

Hiro plays a little mind game and convinces his dad to put his sister in charge because she really knows what to do with this company (that's right - girls rule!). Hiro's dad finally agrees and leaves Hiro alone.

Did anyone catch the "NCC 1701" specialty plate on Hiro's dad's car? That was a Star Trek reference.

My favorite thing about this episode: No Matt Parkman and his oh-so-boring-already marriage problems. He'll be back by next episode to get into some trouble, but he's become my least favorite Hero. And this episode flowed well without his pyscho-drama. Also, Mohinder Suresh's quasi-scientific musings were absent from this episode.

I like the pace of Heroes, it's fast and furious and doesn't waste time. I think the idea of "ignoring" certain characters during episodes is a great one. We don't NEED to know what everyone is doing every week. In that, they can take a page from LOST. Sometimes the audience gains a lot from spending some "quality time" with certain characters.
