Earth Dance Miami

September 15, 2007, at 7PM EST, nearly half a million world citizens in over 60 countries and 350 locations worldwide will join together for the world's largest synchronized music and dance festival for peace and to support humanitarian causes through the global language of music and dance. The defining moment of each Earthdance event is a synchronized link-up, when every event around the world plays a specially produced song called "The Prayer for Peace" at exactly the same time.

It will be an all day event with tons of music, performance art, yoga, and more. Doors open at 2pm. Tix are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and here's the real bargain: get there before 4pm and get in 2 for 1.

The Best New Thing

My friend showed me this great new service from Google over the weekend...

She told me that if you text Google (46645) and put in a search term they will email you back the results. This works best if you are trying to find a store or restaurant. (Go to the Google site to see what Google Mobile is capable of - local listings, flights, weather, driving directions, glossary, movies, sports...much more)

The charge is only how much it costs you to send and receive text messages.

So let's say you are looking for "Baja Fresh, Miami FL" - text that to 46645 and within a few minutes you will get back a list of Baja Fresh restaurants in Miami FL. I just tried it out and got back from Google (in less than a minute) the two locations (in Brickell and Coral Gables), with their full addresses and phone numbers. Amazing!

Try it out - it is way cheaper than calling 411 and it is fast and easy!

Peter Bjorn and John

The video above is the official music video for Peter Bjorn and John's excellent "Young Folks." It's the lead single off the album, Writer's Block. The album was released in Sweden (where they're from) in 2006, but it was only released in the U.S. in 2007 and seems to be taking over the collective mouths and ears of the indie rock generation. I can therefore call it one of the songs of the year!

The video is cute and was probably cheap to produce (way to be smart, Peter Bjorn and John!) and, of course, the song is instantly catchy and infectious.

The whole album is worth checking out. It's chock full of great melodies and musical surprises. I'd never heard of them before "Young Folks" was all over The Fork, but I'm a big fan of Swedish indie pop music (Radio Dept, Shout Out Louds, anyone?) and am glad Peter Bjorn and John are getting a lot of international attention.

"Objects of my Affection" is actually the first song on the album (second track, after a perfect little intro) and the first song I fell in love with. It sounds like the version used in this video is a slightly different mix. I haven't been able to find any reference online to a "single version" of this song, but there's definitely some minor additions and the mix itself seems a little cleaner than on the album.

Regardless, this is another great song. I love the line, "I laugh more often now, I cry more often now, I am more me." The video is perfect. Peter Bjorn and John seem to make music that is fit to be played in art galleries and the video, with its random imagery and constant movement, reminds me of a recent gallery hopping adventure.

Finally, another video, for the latest single from Writer's Block, "Let's Call It Off:"



Not exactly sure what's going on there, but it doesn't matter. The song's great, huh? Definitely a single version here. With the initial (Swedish) release of the album, the version of "Let's Call it Off" was darker and moodier. For some reason, the guys didn't like it, remixed it and released it on the American edition as the "Single version." That's the mix here.

The song is a lot more traditional than the other stuff on the album, which proves these guys are extremely talented. They can pull off wild seven-minute distortion heavy tracks, catchy indie anthems, and ready-for-radio singles. I wonder what else they have under their sleeves for future releases?

Earthrace Pod on Current.tv

Longtime readers may recall that Shawn and I are big Current TV fans. There's a pod (what Current calls their "shows") up at their website, current.tv, that is this close to making it on TV. This pod, seen below, is part of VC2, or viewer-created content and it needs to be "green-lighted" by enough people to make it on the air and win the producers of the pod a $1000.

I think this is a great pod because it highlights Biodiesel, the wave of the future (hopefully), and has some gorgeous shots of the Miami skyline. (I could do without the repetitive techno, but, hey, it's a Miami pod.)

Miami, You Have Surprised Me!

Saturday night Elad, Superbee and I went to the Gallery Walk in the Miami Wynwood Art District. It takes place every 2nd Saturday of each month.

Of course my dumb ass forgot my camera, but Critical Miami has some pictures of galleries that I don't think I went to (I think they went to galleries in the Design District and not the Wynwood District - or maybe I was drunk)

Anyway, we had a great time! I know usually we give Miami a lot of shit for being a sub-par city - being that mostly everything to do with the city sucks. But for once, I was part of something that wasn't sucky!

We started up around 36th Street and Miami Avenue. We hit up the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery and the Dot Fiftyone Gallery along with some others. At this point we were already happy with what we were seeing. Plus the free booze was flowin.

Next we walked down Miami Ave and checked out Spinello Gallery, Signature Art Gallery, Hardcore Art Contemporary Space, Kunsthaus Miami and I think some others. At this point I don't remember any names of Galleries and I am resting entirely on the Wynwood Map for guidance.

A little tipsy, we finally made our way towards the 23rd Street hub of action. All of the galleries were filled with people and offered snacks (cheese, fruit, crackers) and beverages (I had a fabulous Mojito and a Chocolate Martini....mmmmm).

In the middle of naming Superbee's first child "winesnack" and trying to hail a cab to Denny's I realized that I hadn't had that much fun in awhile. And yes, I have Miami and my lovely partners in crime for the evening to thank for that.

So if you ever are free the 2nd Saturday of the Month I highly recommend checking out the excitement in the often-shady-but-not-on-this-night Wynwood neighborhood.

Mentos....The Grapefruit Maker?

So, earlier this week I had the privilege of trying what promises to be a new favorite indulgence.

We are all familiar with Mentos....you will recall, thanks to their oft imitated commercials, that they are the, um, "FRESHMAKER."

What you may not realize, however, is that the tasty little candies are not limited to the mint varietels. Rather, there are numerous other flavors available. A quick glance at Wikipedia, shows that there are at least 16 different flavors (maybe more!). Unfortunately, not all of these flavor varieties are available in the States.

Well, on another blog I love to read, Not Martha, I had read about these grapefruit ones. The writer there had recently visited our Neighbor to the North, Canada. There, she had the opportunity to sample these taste treats. I knew at once I had to find them!

Then, like magic, yesterday - I stumbled on them in my office building's sundry shop! Can you believe it? Right there, all this time? I bought the roll, and rushed back to my desk for my tasting.

Slightly tart, slightly sweet, totally chewy - the mentos experience faithfully captures what we love about Pink Grapefruit! The candy isn't cloyingly sweet, however, it's not shockingly sour either. Rather, it is a pleasing balance of tartness.

I suggest you look for these in your area. Maybe try some of the other flavors, too. The only one I saw on Wikipedia that I could do without, though, is Raisin. YUCK!
